Teaching Philosophy
As a teacher, I believe students should have a place where they can explore and express who they are. My teaching philosophy is based on building an atmosphere where students feel free to explore their thoughts and discover their own voices. Everyone should feel appreciated and encouraged in the classroom so they may be open and vulnerable while trying new things and developing.
Teaching is about creating a sense of community, not just feeding information. By creating an environment where students can freely explore who they are through academic work as well as their own personal experiences, they develop confidence in both their abilities as learners and their ability to make an important impact to society.
Units of Learning
Painting UoL
The subject matter and stimulus for this Unit of Learning is a personal experience into learning the importance of a underlayer process in painting. Students will select and compose a simple still life and determine the complimentary colours and create a painting using the layering process. The still life will be composed of objects that represent childhood– toys, sweets, colours etc. Students must write a short explanation on how they perceive childhood to be represented and why they think it’s important to keep these memories alive. Examples of each stage of the process must be explored in a sketchbook...
Collage UoL
The subject matter and stimulus for this Unit of Learning is to create a portrait inspired by Bauville and Jean Metzinger. Students will create a painting looking at colour theory, matching complimentary colours in their portraits, beginning with a montage to allow a further understanding into where facial features will be placed. Students will develop an experience into experimentation while learning essentials for art if they decide to keep this subject on. A collection of artist research will first be compiled, including cubist and surrealist artists looking at colour placement and focusing on the effects of displacement...
Printmaking UoL
The subject matter for this Unit of Learning is for students to design and create a linoleum cut for a cover of a children’s storybook. This lino must be explored in the sketch book initially. Students are to create an A5 design and consider other illustrator’s creations, including Ed Asher Briant, as part of their research. The story book will be targeted towards 4–8-year-olds. The book cover will be based on a personal experience into the area around them. It is essential to consider that the work produced is age appropriate. The cover must give an indication to the natural area around them...
